03/07/2014 | Barcelona

In the closing session of the international conference cycle "Ciutadella Park: The First Science Park in Barcelona", organized by the Natural History Museum of Barcelona and the Barcelona Zoo Foundation, Serageldin gave a keynote speech entitled ‘It’s Natural: Know the World, Know Yourself’. He spoke of the challenges of science institutions such as natural history museums, zoos and botanical gardens, and their role in the cultural and social scene of the future. Anticipating that “the new technologies will make virtual visits to long bygone sites, realistic animations with extinct species and all other sorts of phenomena available on personal devices that link to the Internet”, Serageldin says: “Our Museums of Natural History will have to reinvent themselves and focus on ‘connections between collections’ and on ’pivotal pieces’ to tell the story of life on earth and our place in it”.

Jaume Casals, Rector of Universitat Pompeu Fabra, summarized the conclusions of the conference cycle and the event was brought to a close by Anna Omedes, the Director of the Natural History Museum of Barcelona, and Miquel Trepat, the Director of Barcelona Zoo.

During his visit to Barcelona, Serageldin was interviewed by La Vanguardia newspaper, BTV and ARA newspaper.
