Ismail Serageldin and all the staff of the Library of Alexandria offer their condolences to the families of the young people who lost their lives in the tragic events of the football match in Port Said last week. The BA observes three days mourning and shares in the grief of all of Egypt over all the young lives lost.

At an urgent meeting held at El-Sennary House, Dr. Mohammed El-Sharnoubi, Secretary General of Egypt’s Science Academy, the Institut d’Egypte, announced that Dr. Ibrahim Badran was chosen as the new President of the Academy, and Ismail Seragelin as the Vice President. Serageldin had up to now been a member of the Board of Directors.

Tilburg, The Netherlands
At the Nexus Institute in Tilburg, Serageldin addressed a large audience of intellectuals, artists, diplomats, politicians, and other decision-makers, with a lecture entitled “Knowledge and Memory in Alexandria. A Bridge between Islam and Europe”. The lecture was very well received and was followed by a question and answer session with the audience, moderated by Rob Riemen, Founder of the Nexus Institute.

At the two-day Conference on Copyright Documentation and Infrastructure organized by The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), on 13-14 October, Serageldin will deliver a keynote address entitled “Copyright Infrastructure: Enabling the Exercise of Rights and Facilitating the Public Interest”. The meeting is open to the general public and participants will include technology experts, policy developers and legal practitioners.

At the STS Forum Eighth Annual Meeting, Serageldin gave a plenary session speech on Food and Population, and also lead a discussion on Regional Climate Change Adaptation in Africa. Since the inauguration of the STS Forum in November 2004, an annual meeting is held on the first Sunday of October every year in Kyoto, Japan, gathering top policymakers, business leaders, scientists, researchers, media leaders and Nobel laureates from all over the world, to address science and technology issues in the 21st century.

Serageldin is invited to speak at the international conference “Improving the Capacity to Assess and to Adapt to Climate Change in Urban Coastal Regions”. Organized by the Venice Water Authority through Consorzio Venezia Nuova with the assistance of Thetis and the Sustainability Solution Institute at the University of California at San Diego, the event brings together experts from around the world to exchange knowledge and discuss the best methods to assess the impact of climate change on coastal urban regions and identify suitable adaptation measures for development.

Serageldin meets tomorrow, 15 September, with the jury committee members of the Chirac Foundation to select a winner for the Chirac Foundation Prize for the Prevention of Conflicts. The selection is to be made after meeting with a committee of experts who propose a list of individuals or institutions that have taken exemplary and urgent action towards prevention of clash in areas of potential conflict.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation invited Serageldin to present their Ninth Annual Lecture in Johannesburg . The aim of the lecture was to stimulate dialogue around a range of critical social justice issues. Previous speakers were Presidents Bill Clinton, Thabo Mbeki and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Nobel Laureates Desmond Tutu, Wangari Maathai, Kofi Anan and Muhammad Yunus.

Serageldin was invited to be this year’s speaker at the 2nd Annual Malthus Lecture. This is a lecture series organized once a year by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the U.S. Population Reference Bureau. The name of the series refers to the English scholar Reverend Thomas Robert Malthus, known for his theory published in the early 19th century that sooner or later population gets checked by famine and disease.
