Paris, October 22nd, 1999 Dear friends,
Allow me to express my deepest gratitude for the efforts and support that you have given me over this long campaign. I cannot find the adequate words of appreciation for yoeur confidence in me.
This campaign was guided by a vision of a better future and ideas about what we could do to make it a reality. Ideas that involve us all in rising to the challenges of the new century. My hope was, and always will be, to mobilize all of us, from the academic world, the civil society, the international organizations, and the private sector to work together on specific topics to create that better future by translating ideas into action.
This campaign was rich in substance and ideas. We addressed the ethical aspects of the new scientific revolution in biology and informatics; the need to rethink education; the challenges to the individual, society and the state in this globalizing world; the growing gaps between the rich and the poor within and between countries; the role of cultural identity, of democracy, and of the continuing battle to end discrimination against women and to defend human rights.
I am happy that this vision and these ideas struck a chord with many of you, all over the world, from the most diverse backgrounds: researchers, activists, NGOs, artists, decision-makers, educators, scientists and development specialists.
The election for the Director-general of UNESCO is now over. The member states chose on the basis of other criteria and other priorities. But the great challenges remain. All of us who are committed to the values of our common humanity and the indivisibility of human rights and fundamental freedoms, will act to address these challenges. Guided by that vision of better tomorrows, many are hoping to work together to create that better future.
I hope to contribute with you all in turning that vision to reality.
Sincerely,
Ismail Serageldin |
