SERAGELDIN REMAINS COMMITTED CANDIDATE!

In response to the malicious rumors being spread about his withdrawal, Serageldin has sent the following message to members of the Executive Committee of UNESCO:

Your Excellency:

Friends and colleagues have told me of a rumor about my alleged withdrawal from the contest for the position of UNESCO’s Director General. The rumor is totally false.

I am a candidate for the position because I am inspired and challenged by the nobility of UNESCO’s mission and purpose, as described in the Constitution of the organization. I am encouraged by the widespread expressions of support that I am receiving from many quarters, and I will remain a candidate until the final ballot in November 1999.
